Waterloo leaf pickup in 2026: your zone gets one visit
Waterloo’s loose-leaf pickup is for boulevard-tree leaves, with one visit per zone. The posted weeks run October 26 to November 21. Have the leaves ready by 7 a.m. on your zone’s first day, and keep bike lanes clear.

The old thread raised a rule people still miss
Before raking a boulevard pile, find your Waterloo collection zone. Crews plan only one loose-leaf visit, and the leaves need to be ready at 7 a.m. on the first day of its week. The tree the leaves came from matters too: this service is for city boulevard trees.
A November 2020 local discussion highlighted that loose-leaf collection is meant for city boulevard trees. That is an older recurring question, not a 2026 schedule. The current city page confirms the distinction.
Do not rake backyard or private-yard tree leaves into the city pickup pile. A truck passing your street does not make every kind of garden waste part of this service.

Place the pile where crews ask
The city says to prepare boulevard leaves by 7 a.m. on the first day of the week. Where there is a bike lane, keep the leaves at the edge of your property. Without a bike lane, the instruction is close to the road curb. Remove sticks and other material.
Crews visit each zone once. Do not count on a return for a missed pile. Snow or freezing weather can pause or end collection because the same trucks are used for snow clearing.

Deal with the rest separately
For leaves from your own trees, use the appropriate regional yard-waste option or keep a suitable amount in the garden. This article covers the city’s loose boulevard pickup, not every waste service in Waterloo Region.
Look up the zone for your address before filling the curb. A neighbour across a boundary may have a different week.

The trees on your property and the boulevard are different jobs
A large pile of leaves can look like one task, but Waterloo’s loose-leaf program is aimed at leaves from boulevard trees. The older local discussion is useful because neighbours were trying to work out that boundary. The current city instructions settle the rule. Do not move every leaf from the back garden to the street and assume the vacuum crew will take it.
Start by finding the collection zone for the address, then write down the first day of its 2026 week. Crews plan one visit, and leaves must be ready by 7 a.m. on that first day. Waiting until the truck appears can be too late. The week is a work window, not a booking for a particular afternoon, and weather can send equipment onto snow work instead.
For example, someone in W6 has an October 26 to 31 window, while W2 is in the November 16 to 21 group. Those dates are far enough apart that copying a nearby street’s preparation can lead to the wrong week. Use the city’s own zone map. The fact that neighbours are raking is not proof that your street is due next.

Keep the pile useful to the crew and the street
The placement instructions change where there is a bike lane. Use the property edge in those locations and the curb arrangement elsewhere as the city directs. Do not make a pile that forces a person cycling to swerve into traffic. Keep material out of drains, and separate branches or other debris that do not belong in the loose-leaf collection.
The fall-colour and park discussions celebrate the same season that creates the cleanup job, but they are not collection instructions. Once leaves come down, use the current municipal guidance for disposal. If the city advises a separate yard-waste route for material outside this program, follow that route instead of adding it to a convenient-looking roadside pile. A few minutes spent sorting the job can save moving the same wet leaves twice.
The 2021 leaf-program debates show the tradeoff behind the service. Some residents worried that loose piles obstructed people cycling, while others described the effort and storage needed for bagging large amounts. Replies suggested mulching as another option. Those differing needs help explain why current placement rules matter. The 2026 schedule is still the one to use, rather than treating an old proposal to scrap the program as something that happened.
